Becoming a Police Officer

Testing Background:

Background test is part of the interview which involves detailed questions about your family and friends. To succeed in the background check one should remain calm for all the time (Schroeder & Lombardo, 2001, p.4).

Police academy:

Once your application is approved for becoming a police officer, you will be sent to the police academy, usually for three to nine months. The training at a police academy includes physical trainig, self defence, classroom instructions, safe use of weapons, moral training, etc (Harris, 2008).

Pursue continuing education:

Police officers throughout their career are expected to attend various seminars and workshops in order to cope with changing needs. In this way police officers remain in touch with the current legal procedures and to communicate in a better way (Harris, 2008).

Benefits:

There are many benefits of becoming a police officer such as they immediately receive health insurance, paid vacations, dental and life insurance, sick leaves, etc. Benefits vary from post to post. They attain proud status in society (Palmiotto & Brown, 2008, p.23).

Disadvantages:

Apart from benefits, there are many disadvantages of becoming a police officer. Firstly the job of a police officer is highly dangerous. They have to face difficult situations and risks throughout their career. Officers are more susceptible to infectious diseases, physical injury, extensive stress and death. Secondly they don’t get rewarding pay.

Future of The Police:

Police job is stable and challenging. Employment of police is expected to increase by the increasing number of crimes. There are a lot of opportunities for the people who want to become a police officer.

Conclusion:

Indeed,
there is always a need of highly skilled and trained police officers because of increasing crime rates. It’s true that new technologies have provided law enforcement with advance ways of investigating crimes. There is constantly need to hire and train new policing candidates who are able to work selflessly, devoting their lives to the nation and act as a role model for society.
