The American civil war traces its origin to events that occurred in the earlier year’s upto 1861 that led to the formation of two American groups. The economic variations in the southern and the northern regions served as the major source of conflict. The northern region was industrialized while the southern region was heavily dependent of cotton growth and thus highly dependent on slaves. The industrialization in the north transacted into a city life that resulted into the increased interaction of people from different cultures and social classes. The southerners however held on to the status quo. The growth in the north as compared to the south made it difficult for the southerners to have substantial control over the government. This led to political disunity among the politicians.

The Missouri compromise that was passed led to the union of the American states obtained in the Louisiana Purchase, which made it illegal for slave trade to be practiced in certain parts of the country. Conflict arose between the pro slavery (southerners) and anti slavery (northerners) relating to the slave status of the lands to be acquired out of the Mexican victory that would lead to the acquisition of additional lands in 1850. Another issue that accelerated the civil war related to the Kansas and Nebraska Act that created two territories that would be used to determine the slave and non slave states. This act replaced the Missouri act of 1854.The real issue started when Missourians who were for slavery tried to force slavery in Kansas City a situation that led to violence.

State census held in the country in subsequent  indicated similarity to the 1820 census revealing that the southern region was still made up of a majority of slaves while the north side indicated the non existence of slaves. The expansion of antislavery movement focussed on the total abolishment of slavery in all of America. These movements led to major publications and the enactment of the slave act that served to make answerable those who continued the slave trade.

The election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860, who believed to be antislavery, sparked conflict between the northerners and the southerners. This was due to the fact that the southerners had been opposed to the president’s election as they believed he was in favour of the northerner’s interests. His election led to the withdrawal of up to seven states from the union of the United States.

In summary, Fundamental events that led to the onset of the war include among others slavery, the economic variation existent amongst the northern and southern citizens, increased abolishment movements and the election of Abraham Lincoln. The war resulted into the killing of more than half a million men and the injury of thousands of others from the fifty battles that constituted the war. A war that led to the assassination of the president shortly after the surrender of the confederate troops to the union army.
