Introduction

Wars are armed conflicts. Major and minor wars have been witnessed since time immemorial to unify kingdoms, enthrone and overthrow leaders around the world and a good example is the Vietnam War. However, some wars were and may be justified, for instant the wars that were fought in some countries to attain independence.

Vietnam War

In Vietnam, the issue was communist north and the anti-communist or capitalist south. Between 1956 and 1960 the Vietnam desired to reunify southern and northern. The northern communists were backed by some communists from the south, Vietcong by name. The conflict brought about an initiative in which the Geneva accord divided Vietnam into two i.e. the communist north and the anti-communist south. This is the time the Americans had openly taken sides to support South Vietnam because it was anti-communist and they went onto war.

Vietnam War was the bloodiest war that has ever been fought. Between the 1960 and 1964, the communist party had a strong belief that they will win the war. The United States military in Vietnam was bogged down for the reason that they did not have a clear strategy to win the war. (Kirtley 2001) states, “The military mission is to fight and to win, whatever conflict may present itself preferably in the battlefield but certainly in public opinion the history books”. The communist party also ensured that no political settlement was not or never available for the Americans. In the early 1970s many Americans were against the war and many were conducting demonstrations in Washington DC. Many were against the war as many troops died. Unfortunately many of the troops were African Americans of who the majority died as Bond (1967) illustrates, “Muhammad Ali and the black Muslims were against it and Malcolm X was against”. This prompted the Americans to face the Johnson administration with fierce anti war sentiments.
