Common Academic Standards

The common academic standards are based on what students require for college and the career readiness. The implementation of these common standards provides a good opportunity to examine the current delivery system. This essay reviews the various measures taken by the states and the federal government to deal with the common academic standards issue.

States and federal government cooperation on common academic standards

The different state governors have much interest in the initiative because there is an opportunity to create greater efficiencies by combining their resources as opposed to going it alone. This is because the general performance of U.S. students is low and the assessments show that they have a task of catching up with the top performing countries. Each state accepts the federal funding and the standards that go with it, or to forgo some federal dollars to maintain separate curriculum development and the standardized testing strategies.

The federal government establishes the minimum standards that all states should at least aspire to and it has laid some work for standards-based education. Bringing the states together on the development of common state standards helps the U.S. students to compete with students from around the entire world. Much of the funds that support education come from the states that have the constitutional responsibility of educating the citizens.

The federal government has made some initiatives mandatory through the grant condition process and it has also committed a lot of money to developing the common assessments that match with the common standards. Also, it also put some funds for the disadvantaged children in all the states.
