A teacher’s career is one of the most complicated and challenging careers in the world because it involves setting the foundation for the future generations’ development. The role of the principle focuses on regulating the demanding process of teaching due to the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) Standards. The Wallace Foundation video tells about two school principles, who employ different methods to improve the quality of education. Although, their approaches are quite different and somehow opposite, they are addressed according to the ISLLC Standards.
- The stories depict approaches of novices and veterans of education and how their methods are improving the school. It a daily hard work struggle, where the principles understand their responsibility and devote themselves to the improvement of children and teachers. The reason behind such an effort is the desire to change the world and make children successful in their future. Thus, Tresa works as a principal for two years while paying much attention to the idea of stewardship of vision as one of the essential standards of the ISLLC (The Principal Story, Documentary on School Leadership & Education, 2009). She prefers an emotional level of communication and relates to the children rather as a friend than as leader of the school. Carry starts her career as a principal six years ago and controls her work as a professional (The Principal Story, Documentary on School Leadership & Education, 2009), and pays more attention to encouragement. Carry teaches children and mentors teachers too. School life under her leadership is like a competition where every one knows about their successes and weaknesses as well.
Thus, the leaders of both schools perform according to the requirements and expectations of the ISLLC Standards. They differently control the educational process and have different ideas depending on their level of experience and teaching practice. Nevertheless, it is possible to admit that both principles do their jobs skillfully.

- The ideas of emotional communication and friendly relationships with the pupils are the most impressive style. Normally, the principle of a school takes on the professional stereotype, who has his personal office and deals only with the students who have some problems with the educational process, communication, or discipline. However, the two leaders in the story seem to be doing the opposition of this belief, given the way they interact with pupils and the teaching staff. Their stewardship is based on close contact and active work thus, it is not just about working in a community, rather an active involvement in, and with the community. Tresa can smile back to those who smile at her and take part in games such as, jumping the rope with the girls in the school yard without any complexes or fears. The idea of making the children feel closer seems to be quite successful, and a perfect opportunity to penetrate the process of education easily. Therefore, the approach of Tresa is excellent even though it is not traditional.
Similarly, Carry’s system is also interesting. It is a vibrant circle of friendships and strict leadership. The methods of encouragement are a part of the approach. Tresa understands her students and teachers when they make mistakes. Carry is more professional since she has more practice and experience than Tresa. She seamlessly copes with her duties and does not restrict the appropriate and friendly distance between pupils and teachers. It is reasonable to admit that her system of encouragement and style of leadership is an excellent approach of maintaining a vibrant learning environment. Moreover, her six years practice proves that she is skillful enough to change the world if she is capable of changing a school. Certainly, both principles’ techniques and approaches to school control are based on instructions, though they use different methods to implement the standards.
- Dear Teachers. I am happy to see you here, but my fear and astonishment is overloaded in my heart now. I feel a big responsibility and pleasure to lead this school even though I have never known that a school principle’s work is based not only on administrative and instructional issues, but also a profession of total devotion, respect, and love to children and teachers. I am pleased to say that my leadership will never devalue your skills, authority, and professionalism.
I am not a commander in chief to force you to do something. I am a friend, advisor, and a partner of our common goal, which is to make our school an effective educational establishment which makes students feel comfortable and be sure about it, and to make the teachers be the best professionals at their work.
First, I want to address what I am not going to do. I am not going to suppress your positions, desires, conceptions, and ideas. It is entirely your personal space of work. I am not going to criticize or humiliate your kind of methodology because it is your preferred choice. I am not going make revolutionary changes and innovations. All the necessary actions have to be considered, debated and discussed together. However, I am going to check the process vigilantly and supervise the educational process, to listen to everyone in this school to find the necessary golden middle in the community. I will be a friend and a companion rather that a ruler. Nevertheless, the leadership of a principle is an essential part of the school’s success since it coincides with respect and coordination. I wish to find this golden middle of friendship and supervision with your help.
A teacher is the heart of the school, an inspired leader in the life of every single child, and a perfect example. Therefore, the mission is to find the main features of an absolute teacher to teach, communicate easily, and inspire students to love their school and be happy to spend most of their time here. Students are different, but all of them make the essential detail of the complicated mechanism of life, the society. It does not work without them, and it does not matter what marks and results they get in the school, the aim of a teacher is to encourage them and make them feel that schooling a place for their personal space and freedom. We have to realize time that children spend here as the best moments of their young life, thus it must be interesting, educative, and useful. The problem is that some children associate studies with disappointment, fear, or indifference. A teacher should take an active part in the emotional aspect of a student’s life. He or she must be a reliable advisor and deputy. The mission of the principle is to help teachers and students change the world to the better.
My objective is to be attentive and fair, and even though friendship, love, and respect are the background for the school affairs, the educational focus has to be central and quality. Control and punishment are also part of the educational process, otherwise learners will not take their school work seriously. However, it should not be depressive or humiliating but aimed towards establishing an effective system of monitoring and fostering the spirit of encouragement. Furthermore, I promise to meet every child in school personally even though it is not easy, to bring them closer as we aim to set an example for the rest. The duties of a principle do necessarily mean head or ruler, but rather being responsible for everything that happens in the school.
- Dr. Kent M. Keith explains the key feature of the servant-leaders. The purpose is to be an effective leader and achieve the necessary and positive results during the working process (n.d.), hence, the author proposes several important elements of concern. The first feature is self-awareness. An effective leader has to be aware of his personality and that of other people around him or her. Personal characteristics can be understood from a collective feedback and therefore a servant must be attentive to apprehend. Seemingly, he or she can use different methods such as observation, listening, and group discussions. The methods can help identify a problem and how to solve it. However, the author considers the obstacle as a traditional pyramid in the organization (Keith n.d). The workers try to please their bosses, while the leaders can be less informed and will not be able to change the situation. In addition, some progress in the office is possible only in the face of collective development. The servant-leader should define the most appropriate training programs for foster positive development. This method is closely connected with the principle of control. The process of regulation can be effective only in an environment of respect because strict and abusive measures do not give people their space and chance to feel comfortable. True success and effective cooperation can appear only in the atmosphere of balanced freedom. A servant-leader can encourage students and offer them ideas to enable them make the necessary contribution to the learning process. The last and one of the most important elements of leadership is advanced planning. A professional and successful administrator should plan everything in advance and be sure about it as the ethical base for the work and skills of a ruler. The author of the article does not reject other instructions for the leaders, but his conceptions seem to be the most effective.
