The Conception Of Liberal Theories

During the work on the issue of international relations, much attention was paid to the conception of liberal theories that were provided by Michel W. Doyle and Andrew Moravcsik. Both readings represent a unique vision of the current problem. As a theoretical framework of liberalism encompasses a wide range of subjects, the main emphasis was put on the political aspect. The chosen readings reveal the leading traits of such a well-developed basis and provide a critical overview of the main assumptions. That is why they are worth taking into consideration in the context of the detailed analysis. Thus, this reflection aims at outlining the particular features of both documents and discussing the most important findings that were made in the process of elucidating the significant notions.

The first work “Liberal Theories of International Relations: A Primer” written by Moravcsik (2010) provides a deep understanding of the nature of international relations. As the theory focuses on the essential human rights and democratic principles, its importance cannot be underestimated under any pretext. Conventionally, the relevance of the author’s research to the world politics is revealed in terms of social interests and values of states. In the context of the contemporary community, the research on globalization has an apparent influence on a daily basis. This affects most spheres related to societal cooperation and has a profound impact on the intergovernmental dialog. Subsequently, social concerns occupy one of the leading places in the modern dialog, engendering a heated discussion between the opponents and the bitter proponents of the globalization.

Moreover, liberal theory is believed to formulate a specific nature of variables and privileges. The socially oriented vector distinguishes it from other political theories and contributes to an original image of this theory. The distinguishing characteristics of this framework emerge from its non-rational approaches to the definition of international relations (Moravcsik, 2010). The inter-state balances of power can be treated from diverse points of view. As a result, there is a peculiar correlation between the interests of nations and political ideology. Besides, liberal theory underlines the concept of fair and unfair wars, providing an apparent rationale to their internal and external causes.

Owing to the recent investigation in the sphere of the political idea, it should be remarked that there are three prominent variants of liberal theory. They include the modes of treatment related to the types of preferences, their variations, and their influence on state behavior. Due to this appropriate division, the researcher is likely to describe the process of liberalism as a third dimension of global politics.

It is important to note that liberalism envisages the state preferences from the position of domestic values and identities that have recently had a tremendous impact on the development of this political idea. According to such perception, the elements of national identity, political ideology, and socioeconomic regulation play a crucial role in the aspect of determining the origins of liberal theories. These integrant parts establish a unique system of values that the majority of the governments tries to abide on a daily basis.

In the second reading “Liberalism and World Politics,” Doyle (1986) shares his doctrinal views from the position of the interconnection between liberal theory and the global politics. In the context of the international political science, the significance of such interdependence cannot be underestimated under any circumstances. From the traditional vision of liberalism, the exercise of such principles as “restraint” or “peaceful intentions” is attributed to the sphere of influence represented by the foreign policy (Doyle, 1986, p. 1151).

Moreover, the author succeeds in generalizing this well-developed approach and adding a modern perspective to its analysis. Doyle argues whether the correlations between liberal pacifism and liberal imperialism may exist peacefully. Furthermore, it is worth paying the precise attention to the conception of internationalism that affects mostly every sphere of social cooperation. As all liberal states vary in ordinary practice, the provision of these principles may be treated as a non-constant occurrence.

The existence of liberal internationalism also provokes a sharp discussion nowadays, as the relevance of this concept is subject to the severe criticism. The pacification of international relations among liberal states represents a specific occurrence that can be remarked during the process of a state’s analysis. By the way, numerous historical examples that serve as the powerful instrumental tools are to be applied in the context of the present debate. Despite the peaceful tendencies in the official governmental campaigns, the global peace remains rather fragile in the contemporary system of international law. The world conquest continues, and the researcher cannot minimize this apparent feature of the modernized world (Doyle, 1986, p. 1157). Fortunately, the expediency of the outbreak is rather low in the given year, but some acts of violations can be observed even in the present epoch.

Considering the proposed theoretical conceptions, liberalism also corresponds to the notions of another legacy that is called international “imprudence.” Unfortunately, peaceful restrictions work only in the context of liberal relations between the countries. This situation remains true, as there have been numerous military attacks in non-liberal states with a low rate of democratic values.

From my point of view, the nature of a human being, a state, and the role of the international relations are different. The pacifism remains one of the most fundamental principles in the global politics; however, its provision is often neglected due to the lack of lawful basis. On the contrary, the material interests dominate and formulate their apparent concepts of intergovernmental cooperation. The potential danger of a political collapse should be accurately evaluated in this case. Such state of things means that only observance of individuals’ rights may guarantee the peaceful cohabitation in the globalized world.

To summarize, it is essential to highlight that the readings are called to provide a detailed explanation of the major theoretical assumptions that relate to the liberal theories. The development of these approaches always depends on numerous lawful cases and the interpretation of the legislations. Overall, it should be remarked that the coherence of liberal theories is based on the variables that were outlined during the recent investigation. The proposed discussion also created the favorable prerequisites for the further analysis in the nearest perspective.
